DHAKA, Aug 14, 2026 (TNB) – A cabinet reshuffle in the government is imminent following a six-month performance evaluation of ministers and advisers, with the process accelerated by the nomination of LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for the presidency.

Mr Mirza Fakhrul’s prospective move to Bangabhaban has forced a swift redistribution of key portfolios across the administration, triggering wider expectations of a broader cabinet expansion in the coming days.

While the Cabinet Division has yet to issue a formal notification, senior political sources indicate that Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed is tipped to take over the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives. Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie is expected to succeed him at the home ministry.
The restructuring coincides with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s formal appraisal of his administration as it completes its first six months in office. The review is set to pave the way for an expanded cabinet, bringing in party veterans, younger MPs, and technocrats.

“The prime minister may reassign portfolios or appoint new ministers if he finds the performance of any cabinet member unsatisfactory,” said Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman.

Officials in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) noted that whilst Mr Mirza Fakhrul’s presidential candidacy necessitated immediate adjustments, the full extent of the overhaul will be finalised once the performance appraisal is complete.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formed his 47-member administration on 17 February, comprising 24 cabinet ministers and 23 state ministers. A significant number of ministers currently oversee multiple portfolios.

Six cabinet members hold two ministries each, while two manage three. A similar workload distribution exists among state ministers, alongside 10 advisers holding cabinet or state ministerial rank who oversee 16 ministries.

Rather than dismissing underperforming ministers – a move party insiders fear could imply corruption or incompetence – the prime minister is expected to reassign responsibilities and expand the cabinet to lighten heavy workloads.

Among those handling multiple portfolios are Khandaker Abdul Muktadi (commerce, industries, and textiles and jute), Sheikh Rabiul Alam (road transport and bridges, railways, and shipping), and Md Amin Ur Rashid (agriculture, fisheries and livestock, and food). Redistributing these duties is seen as vital to improving administrative efficiency.

Political circles are speculating that senior BNP standing committee members Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moin Khan, and Selima Rahman could be brought into the cabinet.
Discussions are also underway to appoint PM advisers Nazrul Islam Khan and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed as technocrat ministers.
Other names under consideration include Zainul Abedin Faruk and Shahidul Islam Babul, alongside potential promotions for current state ministers.
