Landslides kill 9, including 8 in Rohingya camps, as heavy rain batters Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, July 6, 2026 (TNB) –At least nine people, including eight Rohingyas, were killed in separate landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Cox’s Bazar early today.
Eight of the deaths occurred at different Rohingya camps in Ukhiya upazila, while another person died in Cox’s Bazar municipality. The victims included five children.
Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Panna Akter confirmed the deaths in the Rohingya camps, saying continuous rainfall and hill torrents triggered the landslides.
Ukhiya Fire Service and Civil Defence official Dollar Tripura said four people were killed around 3:00am when a hillside collapsed on houses in Rohingya Camp No. 11.
The deceased were identified as Umme Habiba, 27; her sister Tanzina Akter, 13; Mohammad Rihan, 5; and Harunur Rashid, 3. One person was also injured in the incident.
Earlier, at about 1:45am, seven-year-old Ekram died after being buried under mud carried by a hill torrent in Block D/7 of Kutupalong Rohingya Camp No. 7 in Rajapalong union.
Camp leader Enayet Ullah said Rohingya volunteers recovered the child’s body after local residents alerted them.
In another incident around 1:10am, a hillside collapsed onto the house of Rohingya resident Mohammad Kamal Hossain, in Block D/6 of Jamtoli Camp No. 15 in Palongkhali union.
Rescuers recovered the bodies of Kamal Hossain, 44, his wife Humaira Begum, 39, and their son Mohammad Anas, 4, from the debris, Dollar Tripura said.
Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Md Mizanur Rahman said the landslides occurred due to continual rain from yesterday morning through to this morning. He added that efforts are ongoing to relocate people from risk-prone areas to prevent further accidents.
Meanwhile, a portion of a hillside collapsed onto the house of Ali Akbar in the Sattar Ghona area of Ward No. 12 under Cox’s Bazar municipality around 4:30am, injuring him and two other family members.
Ali Akbar, 50, was taken to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
Confirming the incident, Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Mohammad Ali said the two injured family members were receiving treatment.
Local resident Mohammad Hashem said a portion of the hill suddenly collapsed onto the house with a loud noise, burying three people who were inside at the time. Neighbours quickly rescued them and rushed them to hospital, but one of them could not be saved.
Fire service officials said the incidents occurred within a few hours of each other, and rescue operations continued throughout the night.
The Ukhiya administration said loudspeaker announcements were being made in vulnerable areas, urging residents to move to safer locations as the risk of further landslides remained high due to continuing rainfall.
According to the Cox’s Bazar weather office, more than 250 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Cox’s Bazar in the 24 hours leading up to 6.00am this morning.
Assistant meteorologist Md Abdul Hannan of Cox’s Bazar said the rainfall is being caused by a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal combined with an active monsoon, and that heavy rain could continue for another two days.
